MAPS Board President to step down

Keith Schmelling, the Merrill Area Public School Board President, announced today that he will resign from the school board effective tomorrow, Aug. 26.
In a letter to his board colleagues, Schmelling noted increasing work obligations as the reason for his resignation.
“It is with a heavy heart that I must resign my duties on the Merrill Area Public Schools District’s Board of Education,” wrote Schmelling. “As you know, I work in the property and liability insurance industry and as a claim handler, my workload is always in a state of flux. Due to additional workload the last three years with my primary employment, and what appears to be a never-ending stream of storms, I must resign my duties on the Board of Education effective Friday, Aug. 26, 2011.”
Efforts to fill this vacant position will begin immediately. A notice of school board vacancy will be advertised in the near future.
“I have enjoyed my time on the board of education and have enjoyed working with all members of the board, the staff and administration,” wrote Schmelling. “I will miss the work of the board.”
